Breeder Profile ~

Brambles Nubian Goat Farm

Rebecca Lange

Brambles is the herd name for my forty Nubian cross does and doelings. I purchased my first does six years ago and the herd has been steadily growing in number ever since. Brambles is a closed herd; I have so far kept only my own doelings. To ensure that the characteristics of the does continue to improve, I purchase purebred bucks. I now feel that the doelings are improved enough to be recorded grades and  have started to breed up to purebred standard.

The Long Road Ahead!

The herd pastures all summer behind a portable electric fence. As the farm is located in a river valley, there is plenty of hillside grazing. Winter feeding rations consist of a basic mix of grass hay and oats. Any goats that are not housed inside in the winter months are fed supplemental grain and silage. A bucket of warm silage seems to be much appreciated on cold winter mornings! Throughout the year minerals and salt as well as fresh, clean water are always available. As we in the process of becoming an organic farm, the goats are fed solely on an organic ration.

Since I started raising goats I have come to know what I do and do not like to see in my animals. I choose only what I feel are the best doelings to be marketed for breeding stock: those that have a nice conformation and meet the breed standard for a Nubian. I also breed for temperament and choose to keep both quiet does and bucks. If you are looking for a gentle, dependable doe, then Brambles Nubian Goats are for you!

I also raise pack goats. My first pack goat Tuvok was a bottle fed wether that I chose to keep and train as a pack goat as he is just so darn friendly! He is not just a pet though: Tuvok is also used to guide tourists around the valley where I live. I also train wethers as pack goats for anyone is who is interested in having an amiable companion!

Any doelings, wethers or bucklings that do not make the grade are sold through Heartland Livestock in Yorkton. This method of marketing can bring a few disappointments; however, prices have been generally good over the past couple of years.

Oh and I also make goat milk soap and herbal skin care products. And write articles for Goatkeeper. All whilst working with all the other animals on our farm!
